ASBC Blog

A short description about your blog

Again, this year’s Quick and Dirty Boat Building during the Waterfront Festival is fast approaching… QUICKly, with less than 3 weeks to the competition and participants chomping at the bit to get moving forward with their thinking and designs.

We have many teams returning to give it a go again.  Yet, because we’ve added space, there is room for another this year.  If you want to participate, grab some fellow workers or friends and come to compete.

I’ve attached this year’s rules along with entry form for your use.  There have been some changes to the rules in an effort to enhance the game and make it better.  We appreciate the input we received last year and in years past from participants and made modifications from last year as deemed appropriate. These include the list below but are not limited to the list so please read the rules carefully.

8 teams this year
¼  AC or better quality plywood vs. CDX as used last year
Galvanized screws
$20.11 in materials this year
Team members and helpers are encouraged to paint and enhance the “visual quality” of their boats during the break after 3 p.m.

As in years past this is not only a fun Waterfront Festival event and supported fully by the Anacortes Chamber, but all proceeds from the support of our sponsors goes towards the local non-profit, Anacortes Small Boat Center - http://www.anacortessmallboatcenter.com.  Last year’s event raised over $3,000 towards this community effort!  The hard work and fun loving attitude of the various teams helped in this effort a great deal.  With that in mind:

Remember, this is officially not a competition but a demonstration of your skills and fun loving, hard working attitude.  In the spirit of things, we will again auction judgeships off at the EDASC Waterfront Kick-off Dinner on Friday evening the night before.  In addition, the People’s Choice award is “voted on” with community donations.  So if your strengths may not be in boat building…other avenues may be in order.
This is a fully volunteer event by teams and organizers.  The teams and this event have become a major part of the Waterfront Festival with a huge crowd gathered on the docks to watch and cheer on the fun.  This is hard work for the teams and the hours of focused concentration and your participation is greatly appreciated.

Please take a moment to complete the entry form ASAP.  Don’t forget your team’s T-Shirt sizes and Hold Harmless Agreements.  You can email forms to patbarrett56@gmail.comor fax to 360-397-0376.  Checks (Quick & Dirty Boat Demo-Anacortes Chamber - $100) and paperwork can be mailed to my office address below.

3rd Annual Quick and Dirty Boat Building and Fund Raiser for ASBC

This coming Saturday, May 15th marks the 3rd annual Waterfront Festival Quick and Dirty Boat Building.

Come on down for some good fun and help sell nails for the People's Choice Award.  The email below was sent yesterday to the 7 teams competing in the event.  Check out Joy Brown's videos of events of the past.
============================================

Hello to all Competitors registered in the 2010 Quick and Dirty Boat Building Demonstration on Saturday, May 15th.  This year we will have fun again… with a focus on FUN!  Update!

Teams Registered - 7:

·       D.G. Construction / A. Construction (1st year) Team Leader Fred, brought Q&D to Anacortes, knows Quick and Dirty

·       Nordic Tugs (3rd year) – Claim to have a fast boat this year!

·       Majestic Inn (3rd year) - Judges always appreciate their fine food

·       Strandberg Construction – (3rd year) – Last year’s on the water race winners

·       Chickens of the Sea – AKA - Nauti Girls, last year’s People’s Choice with largest cheerleading section.  So fun so wet!

·       Fiberglass Supply – (1st year) They have the materials experience

·       Chopelas & Associates – Could be a ringer from Arlington.  Last minute entry.

Setup begins at 8:00 a.m.  Building to begin at 9 a.m. thru 3:00 p.m.  The parade route thru the festival to the launch site will begin at 4 p.m.  I’ve attached another copy of the rules for your reference.  Please review again to make sure you understand how this works.  If you have questions not addressed in the rules, I will be happy to answer them on the morning of the event.

Don’t forget, the $20.10 of allowed materials outside what is provided must come with your receipt and be given to a judge before 9 a.m. or those materials will not be allowed.

This is a fund raising event for the Anacortes Small Boat Center (ASBC), a community non-profit, dedicated to getting small boaters and their craft on the waters of Fidalgo Bay.   Your $100 entry fee covers little more than some of the costs of materials and your T-Shirts.  Many sponsors have come forward to donate anywhere from $100 to $1,000 towards the funding of this event.  Well over $1,000 of raw materials alone will be used in the boats from the various teams.  With that in mind, it is important that you and your team members wear the T-shirts that will be provided for you at the event… they have our generous sponsor names on the backs.

In addition, during this year’s EDASC kick-off dinner on Friday night we will be auctioning off (selling for lobbying/influence) 2 of the 5 judge positions.  This is in the spirit of fun, fund raising and our current political climate J.  So I would recommend you work with your various friends and business colleagues and have them lobby for your team.  Tickets may still be had (I believe) by calling EDASC at 360-336-6114.

As you know there are various categories for the building process.  This year, the winning boat across the line will score 2 points vs. 1 point as in the past.  Also, the People’s Choice recognition this year will be determined by a vote throughout the day.  Friends and supporters will be able to buy nails for $1 each to be deposited in a can near your tent.  The heaviest can at the end of the day will be the People’s Choice winner.

During the parade thru the Festival you will be accompanied by a not so genuine New Orleans Funeral Band organized and music written by Karl Blau.  These boats can be heavy after a bit.  You are allowed and encouraged to have friends and family help you carry the crafts thru the grounds.  The crowd will love it!

This event has become one of the great hits of the Festival because it is focused on fun and friendly competition.  Looking forward to seeing all of you there bright eyed and bushy tailed.  Remember… Bribe Early… Bribe Often (no alcohol... just because).

P/Q Dock Hoist Status 2-25-2010

To all Small Boat Enthusiasts:

It’s moving along… slowly…  but we hope to see the P/Q Dock Hoist approved for testing and then use in the very near future.  There has been a snag and it is being worked out.

See the note below, received today from Jenkins Dossen the project manager for the P/Q Dock project.  He has been working diligently to help us get to a community testing stage.
*************************
Hi All,

Status Update on Docks P/Q Small Craft Launch. The facility is partly complete but has one outstanding complication preventing issuance of substantial completion. This complication involves obtaining approved certification (UL) on the hoist control assembly (control box). Once the hoist control assembly is certified by an OSHA approved testing lab the WA State Dept of Labor & Industries will sign-off on the project. The Port is pursuing this issue with the project general contractor for a quick resolution to have the launch facility opened for use. The Port will keep you informed as we proceed with the control box approval process.
Thank you.
-Jenkins

Port of Anacortes
*****************************
Once this issue is resolved we will be scheduling a weekend test launch with several different types of boats for fine tuning.  Shortly thereafter we hope to see a community gathering and ribbon cutting for celebration of a long awaited result… the ability for small boats to get on the waters of Fidalgo Bay easily.
In addition the ASBC Business Plan group continues to work towards an interim business plan that will be presented to the Port in a short time.  With this plan, we anticipate the approval of a temporary small boat storage facility and launch program in the North Basin.

What a summer we should see!
